Six Michelin Plants In U.S. Recognized For Workplace Safety

Trade association cites Michelin for excellence and improvement

Greenville, SC /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual meeting last week, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) presented six of its 20 safety awards this year to Michelin manufacturing plants in the United States.

Two Michelin production facilities were recognized with Excellence awards in worker health and safety, and four plants were acknowledged with Improvement awards in these categories.

RMA's Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) awards, established in 1981, recognize member companies that achieve significant enhancements in worker health and safety. The SHIP awards encourage and reward a company's demonstrated commitment to worker health and safety.

Two Michelin plants, both located in Starr, S.C., (designated US8 and US10 by Michelin), received Excellence awards. Improvement awards were presented to four Michelin facilities: Spartanburg, S.C.(US3); Lexington, S.C. (US5); Lexington, S.C. (US7); and Covington, Ga. (GEO).

"The SHIP results are an important measurement for Michelin because our top priority every day is to provide the safest and healthiest work environment possible for our workers," said Pete Selleck, Michelin North America's chairman and president. "Ultimately, we depend on the hard work, vigilance and determination of our plant employees to maintain a culture of safety at every site."

The two award categories are based on the incident rate for cases of lost workdays at individual plants. The Excellence award goes to facilities that achieve a government safety metric rating, or Days Away Restricted Transfer (DART), that is 75 percent better than the average achieved by other RMA plants. The Improvement award is for plants that achieve an incident rate, as measured by DART, that is both 10 percent better than its rate in the previous year and equal to or above the RMA average incidence rate.

RMA member companies supplied data from 45 individual plants for the annual survey. The data supplied to RMA is identical to information provided to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, which publishes annual injury and illness information on all industries.
