Texas Research International was founded in 1975 by Dr. J. Scott Thornton and conducts applied research and development for government and industrial clients. Under its umbrella, Texas Research International houses two subsidiaries: TRI/Austin, Inc., and TRI/Environmental, Inc.

TRI/Austin, Inc. is TRI's flagship company and conducts materials research and development projects and is committed to providing the highest quality materials science products and services. It offers polymer science and composite materials development, nondestructive testing and evaluation, failure analysis, laboratory testing services, and reliability engineering services for both commercial and government clients.

TRI/Environmental, Inc. was established to address health, safety, and environmental concerns primarily to commercial clients. It focuses on protective clothing evaluation, development, and certification; analytical chemistry testing services; materials testing and characterization; biological testing; compressed air testing; and geosynthetics Ð engineered materials designed to enhance or alter the behavior of soils.
