Caterpillar, Zeppelin Power Systems CZ Recognized For Safety At WNE Awards

Companies honored for first-of-its-kind modular, containerized emergency power solution qualified for the nuclear power industry

Caterpillar Inc. recently announced that the company and Cat dealer Zeppelin Power Systems CZ were recognized for safety in the large company category at the WNE Awards, which were presented at the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) 2018 in June. Caterpillar and Zeppelin were honored for the development of a first-of-its-kind modular, containerized emergency power solution in the Czech Republic that meets the strict certification requirements of the nuclear power industry.

The WNE Awards commend recipients for excellence in four key areas, including innovation, competence and knowledge management, operational excellence, and safety.

Following comprehensive risk and safety assessments conducted by power plant operator CEZ Group and regulatory authorities in the Czech Republic after the Fukushima nuclear accident, Caterpillar and Zeppelin developed a unique power system configuration that offers a robust alternative to traditional designs while introducing an unprecedented level of flexibility.

Installed at nuclear power facilities in Dukovany and Temelín in the Czech Republic, each solution includes a Cat C175-20 diesel generator set delivering 3.2 MW of power, a fuel tank, control panel, switchgear, and cooling radiators protected by customized containers mounted on concrete bases. The system was designed and extensively tested to meet new, higher benchmarks for mechanical impact resistance, seismic qualification, and resistance to electromagnetic pulses.

Using this package significantly reduced the overall project cost when compared with the traditional approach of building a fully reinforced concrete enclosure. It was manufactured, delivered, and installed in less than 12 months to meet CEZ Group’s accelerated installation and implementation timeline.
