FirstEnergy Nuclear Fleet Achieves Safety Performance And Reliability Record

Akron, OH - FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) announced recently that its fleet of power plants -- the Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania; Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio; and Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio -- ranked among the best in the industry for personal safety performance in 2007, with eight federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incidents. Industry top quartile is ten incidents. Collectively, the sites worked more than 12.1 million hours without a lost time accident.

In addition, FENOC achieved a new fleet reliability record in 2007, generating 30.3 million megawatt-hours net of electricity. This surpasses FENOC's previous generation best of 29.9 million megawatt-hours, set in 2004. A 46-megawatt power uprate implemented at Beaver Valley Unit 1 contributed to this accomplishment.

Output in 2007 was 7.1 million megawatt-hours for Beaver Valley Unit 1; 7.5 million megawatt-hours for Beaver Valley Unit 2; 7.7 million megawatt- hours for Davis-Besse; and 8.1 million megawatt-hours for Perry.

"During 2007, FENOC continued to achieve safe, reliable and cost-effective performance at the fleet level," said FENOC President and Chief Nuclear Officer Joe Hagan. "High operational standards will continue to guide FENOC as we strive for industry-leading performance in 2008."

Other FENOC 2007 accomplishments include top-quartile capability factor performance at Beaver Valley Unit 2 and Davis-Besse of 99.8 percent and 98.6 percent, respectively, versus industry top quartile performance of 94.1 percent. Beaver Valley Units 1 and 2 also achieved top quartile performance of .00 percent and .05 percent in forced loss rate. Davis-Besse's forced loss rate was a notable .11 percent.

Beaver Valley and Davis-Besse turned in industry-leading radiological control performance. Beaver Valley Unit 2 set a world record for reactors of its type with an annual online dose of 385 millirem. Beaver Valley Unit 1 and Davis-Besse achieved top quartile online dose performance with 1,651 millirem and 5,900 millirem, respectively, for the year.

In the area of personal safety, Davis-Besse employees have worked more than 7.6 million hours and Perry employees more than 4.4 million hours without a lost time accident. Beaver Valley achieved more than 8 million hours prior to a lost time accident in October 2007.
