IEEE Begins Chemical, Petroleum Plant Standard On Impact Of Natural Disasters On Electrical Systems

Source: IEEE

Piscataway, NJ - Recent natural disasters have surfaced a need for guidelines to help petroleum and chemical facilities minimize how such events affect their electrical systems and to formulate processes that speed recovery. In response to this need, the IEEE has begun work on IEEE P1716™, "Managing Natural Disaster Impact on Key Electrical Systems and Installations in Petroleum and Chemical Facilities".

IEEE P1716 will provide petroleum and chemical plants with recommendations for pre-assessing their electrical facilities for damage potential in defined disasters. It also will provide guidelines for protecting electrical systems during natural disasters, identifying mitigation techniques, developing designs that reduce impact, and putting processes in place to speed the recovery of key electrical systems after a disaster. The standard will stress the need to place basic human needs first during a natural disaster.

IEEE P1716 is sponsored by the IEEE Industry Applications Society.
