Many Safety And Health Topics Featured At The June ASSE Conference
Des Plaines, IL - A slew of topics covering every range of occupational safety, health and the environment including the rebuilding of Iraq and Afghanistan, benchmarking warehouse safety, occupational asthma, mining emergencies, connecting safety to business needs and more will be available for attendees at June's American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) Professional Development Conference and Exposition. ASSE's Safety 2006 will be held this June 11-14 in Seattle, WA, at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.
The conference features more than 200 concurrent educational sessions, 300 exhibitors, special pre- and post-conference seminars; several keynote presentations, technical tours and networking events. Session topics will include management, emergency response, fire protection, career/personal development, international safety and health, ergonomics, human behavior, construction and mining, environmental, transportation, healthcare and much, much more.
"The occupational safety, health and environmental profession is a dynamic field, where practices change rapidly and stakeholder expectations continue to climb," ASSE Chair of the Conference Planning Committee Christine Sullivan, of Colorado, said. "An investment in professional development is absolutely essential to long-term career success. Safety 2006 not only meets those career development needs by providing a wide array of offerings covering the full spectrum of safety, health and the environment, but provides key information on issues both good and bad that our members deal with every day."
In continuing to meet the needs of ASSE members, Sullivan added, we not only have several sessions focused on the safety of Latino workers, but several sessions will be delivered in Spanish. They include ‘Setting Up OSHA Outreach Training Programs for Hispanic Laborers'; ‘The Madrina-Padrino Public Safety Project: A Culturally Competent Approach to Improving Traffic Safety Among Latino Drivers'; and, ‘The Latino Workforce in Europe and the U.S.: Present Situation and Programs Designed to Address Their Workplace Safety.'
Other conference highlights include Monday's keynote speaker, Stan Slap, on the ‘Key to Strategic Implementation.' Tuesday's keynote speaker Steve Farber will discuss ‘Extreme Leadership' and an ‘Executive Summit' will feature a panel of corporate leaders on the impact of employee safety and health in their organizations and their expectations of the safety and health function. Seattle's Pike Place Fish Company's John Yokoyama and Jim Berquist will share how they turned an almost bankrupt fish business into one of the world's most entertaining and successful companies.
Several top officials from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will provide insight into what's new from a federal and state regulatory perspective along with international insight from the United Kingdom and Canada.
In conjunction with Safety 2006 an Academic Forum sponsored by the ASSE Academics Practice Specialty will be held Sunday, June 11. It will focus on issues important to safety, health and environmental professionals (SH&E) involved in teaching students as well as research in safety and health.
More than 40 pre- and post-conference seminars on a wide range of technical and managerial topics where attendees can earn CEUs/COCs, CM points and CMPs will also be offered. Overlapping with the last day of Safety 2006, from June 14-15, the International Society for Fall Protection (ISFP) will hold a Fall Protection Symposium with cutting edge information on the subject of fall protection.
Attendees come from around the globe to attend the ASSE Professional Development Conference (PDC) with more than half being safety directors, managers and engineers. Seventy-three percent of attendees have 10 years or more experience in the SH&E field.
