Safety Services Company, a worldwide leader in occupational health and safety compliance products, today released an infographic illustrating the causes of, symptoms of, and solutions to, workplace stress.

(PRWEB) - Safety Services Company, a worldwide leader in occupational health and safety compliance products, today released an infographic illustrating the causes of, symptoms of, and solutions to, workplace stress.

“Stress is a widespread workplace issue that deserves more attention because it not only affects a person’s productivity, it increases the likelihood of an accident,” said Safety Services Company spokesman Michael Rich.

The majority of Americans are experiencing increasing stress levels, and April is the perfect time to take action against stress because it’s National Stress Awareness Month. Some stats revolving around workplace stress include:

  • An alarming 61% of workers are impacted by chronic stress, resulting in $300 billion of lost productivity
  • Employees with high stress levels have 46% higher health costs
  • Chronic stress exacerbates health, communication, and performance problems

"America is at a critical crossroads when it comes to stress and our health," said psychologist Norman B. Anderson, a PhD and the American Psychological Association’s chief executive officer and executive vice president. "Year after year, nearly three-quarters of Americans say they experience stress at levels that exceed what they define as healthy, putting themselves at risk for developing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Stress is hurting our physical and emotional health and contributing to some of the leading causes of death in this country. All of us, including the medical community, need to take stress seriously since stress could easily become our next public health crisis."

While some workplace stress is normal, excessive stress can interfere with an employee’s productivity and impact their physical and emotional health.

To battle stress in the workplace, it is important to utilize proper training to make employees aware of the real dangers associated with stress.

In addition to educating employees, management should engage in work practices that lower stress in the workplace. These types of practices include:

  • Share information with employees to reduce uncertainty about their jobs and futures
  • Clearly define employees’ roles and responsibilities
  • Make communication friendly and efficient, not mean-spirited or petty
  • Set realistic expectations and efficiently manage employee workloads
  • Establish a zero-tolerance policy for harassment
