Trucking Safety Proponent Is Executive of the Year

The South Carolina Trucking Association (SCTA) has named Phil Byrd, president and CEO of Bulldog Hiway Express (Charleston, SC), the 1999 Motor Carrier Executive of the Year. Byrd, recognized as "one of the most active industry leaders of the nineties," was presented with the award at the group's annual meeting at Amelia Island, FL.

In presenting the award, G. Clifton Parker, 1994 recipient and President of G & P Trucking Co. Inc. (Gaston, SC), credited Byrd with working tirelessly for truckers in the state, seeking operational efficiencies at the Port of Charleston, improving truck safety, and promoting the significant public-spirited work of the motor carrier community. Parker added that his friendship with Byrd made presenting the award to him easy, saying, "Phil is a competitor, but one that I trust and respect. He walks the walk."

SCTA president J. Richards Todd called Byrd "easily one of the most active trucking industry leaders in the country and he has been a prolific speaker on matters of highway safety, trucking economics and intermodalism."

Bulldog Hiway Express is Charleston's largest locally owned trucking company and the leading Intermodal carrier in the state. Byrd has presided over Bulldog's rapid growth, while leading the 850 company members of the SCTA during his 1998-99 term as Chairman of the Board.
