Two International Coal Group Operations Honored For Outstanding Safety Records
Scott Depot, Two subsidiaries owned by International Coal Group, Inc. have been honored by federal and state organizations for their outstanding safety records.
ICG Illinois, LLC's Viper coal mine, located in Williamsville, Illinois, was honored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Office of Mines and Minerals for having the lowest accident frequency rate among large Illinois underground mines for the period July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006. The Viper mine employs approximately 244 employees. This is the fifth time the Viper mine has been honored by the IDNR for its outstanding safety record. The mine previously won safety awards in 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2002.
The second safety award was given by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to the Wolf Run Mining Company's Sentinel coal preparation plant in Philippi, West Virginia, for having the lowest injury rate in 2005 for surface facilities in District 3 with one to 10 employees. Wolf Run Mining's Sentinel preparation plant employs 10 workers.
"The MSHA and IDNR awards reaffirm International Coal Group's commitment to the safety of our people," said Ben Hatfield, ICG president and chief executive officer. "This commitment extends to developing and implementing state-of-the art mine safety technologies, such as voluntarily allowing ICG mines to be used as test sites for new wireless communication devices, and conducting a test installation of the recently approved proximity devices that should better protect our continuous miner operators."
